I just came across an article on how some bananas sold at the hypermarkets / anywhere at all are toxic and could possibly cause cancer!

Apparently those shiny, clear skinned bananas we see are dipped in water mixed with Carbide to force-ripe them.. uhhh?

I’m confused.

Obviously this Carbide mixture sounds toxic, deadly even. But how do I know which bananas were dipped in and which weren’t?

It seems that naturally ripe bananas have tiny dark/black spots on the dark yellow skin, and the stalks are black.

Carbide dipped ones are light yellow (like lemon) with green stalks. No black spots.

So choose those ugly ones haha.

Reading about Carbide and its chemical properties gives me headache.

In short, when mixed with water, it emits gas and this gas could get absorbed into the bananas.

And of course into our stomachs.. and tumors grow. And then we die…

So take note on this one!

Spread it around.

As I type this post, my mouth is busy munching crispy cucumber and celery.
Yes, I made salad again.. what to do, I love salads.

This is similar to the one I posted previously, with some minor adjustments.

For today, I used:
1 whole medium cucumber
1 tomato
1 stalk of celery
2 hard boiled eggs
2 sausages
Very little salt
Olive oil
Mustard
1 tbsp mayo (ok next time I will cut down on mayo)

I love having cucumbers in my diet. Crunchy and juicy they are packed with lots of nutrients too (click on the above pic for more info). On my non-lazy days, I juice alot with cucumbers. Very cooling drink for a nice complexion :)

The good thing is that cucumbers are often on sale at my local Tesco store.
3 med-large cucumbers cost only RM0.30! Yes, I'm not kidding - RM0.30 :D

The ONLY downside of feeding on salad? I will be hungry again after 1 hour! Oh no....

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

That is why... I also boil some nourishing soup for tonight :)
Tonight's special brew - Brain Tonic soup.

Hopefully this nourishing tonic will:
Reduce forgetfulness and mental fatigue
Increases alertness
Improves concentration and memory
Increases blood flow to the brain
Reduces the frequency of headaches

When I say Brain Tonic, most probably you'll be thinking of Pig-Brain soup, right? Hehe I don't go to the market often and I don't know how to clean the pig brain, so I use a simpler method.

I buy pre-packed herbs from Tesco :P
Each pack only costs me about RM3-4. Good for 2-3 persons. (too much for 1)

This is what the herbs look like.

Instead of pig brain, I use black kampung chicken. They are healthier and have less fat :P

Always remember to give those herbs a good rinse before you boil them. I usually rinse them at least 3 times, and the last with hot boiling water before placing them into the slow cooker.

Next add in the kampung chicken (also rinse thoroughly). Followed by 2.5 bowls of water. I used hot water if I'm short of time (which happens often haha). No salt as it will rob off the nutritional values of the herbs (so I heard).

Set the slow cooker to Auto and boil for about 4 hours. And enjoy..... ahhh can't wait to taste it.

Update: Uhmmmm the soup is sourish? I don't quite like the taste, must be one of the herbs in there.. The BF said the soup made him wide awake... so I guess it does help a little?

I wasn't that sleepy after drinking it, but I slept quite ok.

Though I came back from work on the dot today, I didn't feel like cooking up anything. But I bought a dozen eggs and aint gonna let them rot..

The moment I dropped my laptop bag, I headed to the kitchen and boiled 2 eggs.

Then I pulled out my yoga mat, switch on the TV (oooh Chinese drama) and did a few rounds of Sun Salutations. Workout from yesterday gave me very sore back (next time remember to layer with towels) so no floor exercise on my back today..

Its PMS week so naturally I craved for junk food. I allowed myself a small pack of Twisties - Tomatoes and a glass of water. Ahh..

Then made hearty eggs sandwiches and a mug of milk.. which leaves me feeling bloated now, burrrp! Excuse me... heee.

As I finish this post, I'm with a glass of Ribena.
Happy :D

Foxy Frangipani

It happens each time The BF went back hometown for the weekend.
I'd love to stay home and try to eat healthy. But.. its PMS week.. sigh and I cannot stop eating!

How healthy is that? :P

Yesterday was quite alright. Had our usual favourite chicken rice + steamed fish head + chai boey. Very satisfying, except that the Lady Boss always forgot about my Chai Boey! I must have my Chai Boey :)

Dropped The BF at his place and The Stomach was still pretty happy until about an hour later.

So I boiled a big pot of barley water..
*Good for cleansing the bladder, and remove heat*
(I forgot to mention it meant visiting the loo every 30 mins!)

And finished a small pack of junk food... ~Charlie Charlie Chickadee~

Then I reached for a small pack of biscuit.. (feeling guilty as I type)

Grapes..

Dates..

Then my dinner finally.

~ Ladies fingers, stir fried with mushroom, and soya paste. (think Collagen!)
~ Green pea + mushroom soup (think Vitamin Bs!)
~ Plain barley (ate is as rice coz I don't use sugar when boiling barley water)

Then I ended the day with Herbal Chicken Soup. Ahhhh bloated.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

What about today?

Started the day with some dates and warm water with a squeeze of lemon.

2 mugs of kopi-o next. (TWO?!? I'm not even a coffee lover, but for some reason...)

The last pack of biscuit. (gulp)

A glass of milk + black sesame powder (love it, but I think it taste better with hot choc)

Yoghurt..

Grapes..

Arghhh that was breakfast?!?

So lunch + dinner:

I finished these by 7.30pm... and at 9pm, I was feeling hungry! OMG..

More Herbal Chicken Soup..

To end the day - one final mug of hot choc + black sesame powder..

And you know what..? The BF will be away for the whole of next week..
Ohmmm....

It has been a while since I had my Foxy-alone-weekend. :)
This recent weekend was my clean the super messy room weekend, so that means no going out, not even for meals.

I bought some sweet potatoes and a pumpkin on Friday night, not sure what to do with them haha.

I have a very bad habit - I don't hunt for food till I'm close to die from starvation. If I cook, there wont be a fixed set of time for cooking. (Where are my disciplines!!?)

So because of that, I ended up just steaming the sweet potatoes; using my rice cooker. Haha yep rice cooker! Just wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly and place them into the rice cooker. Fill it about half with water, and cook! :)

Just these kept me full for almost half a day!

A little info about the nutrition of sweet potatoes:
~ Low in calories
~ Rich in Vitamin A
~ Good source of potassium, Vitamin C, B6, riboflavin, copper, pantothetic acid and folic acid

Tips
When buying sweet potatoes, select sound, firm roots.
Store in a dry, unrefrigerated bin. Do not refrigerate, because this gives it a hard core and an undesirable taste when cooked.

Once cooked, sweet potatoes can be stored for up to 1 week in the refrigerator.

Of course I must have made some nourishing drink to pamper the soul?
For a glowing and radiant complexion, I made Red Dates with Dried Longan drink.

I used about 10 red dates and 6 pcs of dried longan. Slow cook for about 3-4 hours since I was busy cleaning. No need to add rock sugar as the longan gives a pleasant sweet taste :)

Hello! Its been a while since I cook anything, isnt it?

I hardly have the energy to these days, ever since.. like eternity ago?
Well at least these recipes are here to accompany me once my work gets a lil more balanced.

Here are some yummy and simple recipes from Prevention July 2010.

Mouth watering canteloupe. I know I can definitely make Gingered Cantaloupe Smoothie haha.

More of fruits and light meals... salad my fave! Easy to prepare with the condition I have the fresh supplies ready in my fridge..

However.. watermelon AND cheese??

Now on Cooking 101 (I really need to improve!)

Tasty, filling veggies..

And finally, be creative!

Foxy Frangipani
You work blardy long hours, come back late at night, not in the mood to eat out lugging around the laptop - the only option is go back home.

At home, all the creative juice to whip up some delicious dinner, be it simple soups / pasta / salad goes into the drain. Just-don't-have-the-energy!

Is it only me or does this sounds familiar to you too?

On days like this, my quickest dinner would be - fruits.
I tend to avoid heavy meals at night; no noodles, rice, bread, anything that will overwork my digestive system at night haha.

Regulars in my fridge are strawberries, mulberries (I have a tree!), apples, grapes, oranges. One of my favourite? A cup of strawberries drizzled with honey :) Honey to pamper my stomach (I'm prone to gastric) and strawberries to detox my already sluggish skin!

Note:- This is not "BF-approved", so if you have gastric problems, don't over-do it yeh!

I came across this new product from Nestle during one of my groceries shopping trips. There are a few flavours; I think the other was Apple & Orange?
Anyway, I picked the Prune one.. I love love prunes..

Claims: Fortified with protein, calcium, iron and vitamin A, C, D, E.
The suggested serving method is to add 200ml hot milk per sachet.
There are 8 sachets in each pack. 28g per sachet.

Do I like it?
Not really. I didn't take this with milk though. Just hot water.
200ml of hot water would give you a very very watery consistency... and tasteless?

There are bits of prunes.. but don't expect chunks.. just bits.. tiny bits.
Tasted sourish and bland.. I dislike it the first time I tried it.

The next time, I tried with less water.. Better this time.
Faint hint of sweetness with the sourish prune bits.

I guess this is convenient for busy mornings if you don't care much about breakfast.

I'll just finish off the 8 sachets and bid Nestum Fruits goodbye!
